What They Do

Higher Ground’s Military Programs use therapeutic recreation to facilitate a change in perspective, giving injured service members the physical skills, confidence, and coping strategies necessary for a successful reintegration into their families and home communities. The programs serve military personnel and veterans with Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs), Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) and other polytrauma.
Higher Ground hosts eight week-long sports camps annually, each completely free of charge to veterans and their supporters. Camps create an intimate atmosphere where participants connect and share struggles related to battle trauma and injuries, while supporters share challenges about health care, parenting, and their role as caregivers.

What We Love

Not only does Higher Ground build therapy into each day, they provide three years of follow-up care for each participant. In addition, they have a fund set aside to help support veterans in their chosen recreational activity once they get home—anything from a fly rod to a gym membership.
We also love that Higher Ground understands the importance of having proven results to support its claims to helping military veterans. To date, Higher Ground has participated in three published research studies proving the efficacy of therapeutic recreation in helping veterans with war-related injuries to reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress.
